It is basically the way telemarketers get our telephone numbers - other companies sell these lists.
You'd have to search around to find a company which would have the information you need, name, add, tel, etc and determine their willingness to sell to a private company and the cost.
If you wanted to do a phone list - find all of the exchanges (first three of the tel # after the area code), place these into an excel sheet, formulate the sheet to add the extension (last four) for every possible combination - (xxx) xxx-0000, (xxx) xxx-0001, and so forth.
Invest in an automatic dialing system -- be careful of telemarketing/solication laws in your state. |

Hi, I didn't your previous question, but what you would do is define the description of your best customer(s).
Age, gender, income, what cars they drive, where they shop, what magazines they read, where they live, etc - as much as you can come up with. Ideally, you'd do this by studying your existing best customers, but in a startup situation you'd have to ask other Avon reps.
Then you contact a mailing list broker; they are in the yellow pages or you can search online. Two that I've used and can recommend are American List Counsel and www.infousa.com
Just tell the rep "here's what I'm selling, here's my description of my target market, help me find a list."
Now... I've way over-simplified this stuff. Honestly, as an Avon startup, I think you've got better alternatives than "cold" direct mail. In fact, unless you get professional help, it's 95% sure your first direct mailing will be an utter failure and you'll be turned off from DM forever.
Probably the best is to find out who the best Avon rep in your area is, and buy her lunch and find out what she does.

Mail list is a group of people that meet your target customer criteria. So, for AVON, perhaps you'd want to target women, with a certain income, perhaps with jobs/children (people who might be really busy). You can get a list a couple ways... you can buy it from a list aggregator -- ~ $150 for thousand names. People like: InfoUSA or Experian. I don't recommend advertising in a national magazine, it will cost too much and your return will be poor (the money you spend vs. the money you make back as a result of that ad). Isn't AVON a 1-1 sale? My latest recommendation is taking out ads in the back of church bulletins. Really cheap, good cause, decent return and easy. |
