* Affiliate programs, also called associate programs, are arrangements in which an online merchant Web site pays affiliate Web sites a commission to send them traffic.
* These affiliate Web sites post links to the merchant site and are paid according to a particular agreement.
* This agreement is usually based on the number of people the affiliate sends to the merchant's site, or the number of people they send who buy something or perform some other action.
* Some arrangements pay according to the number of people who visit the page containing their merchant site's banner advertisement.
* Basically, if a link on an affiliate site brings the merchant site traffic or money, the merchant site pays the affiliate site according to their agreement.
* Recruiting affiliates is an excellent way to sell products online, but it can also be a cheap and effective marketing strategy; it's a good way to get the word out about your site.
Now a days many duplicate affiliates are available in the market. Beware of them & Look before you leap!

Here it is in layman's terms. When you become an affiliate with a company and send them all your information, you then become a "salesman" for that company. Either selling a product, service, or perhaps all of whatever they offer and they pay you based upon what the people that come " from you " buy.
Example: Let's say I am launching my new " ABC System" and you join up to be an affiliate. I'm selling this package for $!195. Now I have a big list of people I'm going to let know about this, but I don't know everyone.
You have your own list too, completely different group of people ( your circle of influence ) so as an affiliate you let your group know about my $1195 course too. Now when you become an affiliate you get a link or banner to show or send to people that are "Tagged" with your ID on it.
Everyone that clicks on your special links or banners will then be sent to my site where they can buy what I have. For each sale of my $1195 product that came from your group , you earn let's say, $500. ( That's a nice fair percent, each affiliate program will describe exactly what you earn per product)
A lot of the affiliate programs out there have it set up so that let's say someone from you gets sent to my site but doesn't get my $1195 item, but they do buy a $47 Ebook instead. You would get a % of that sale too.
You should avoid making a website or blog that is just plastered with a bunch of different affiliate "stuff." It's best to find something related to what your site is about. Or create an attractive site designed specifically for a group of affiliate products.
