What is better? majoring in advertising or marketing?
i want the one that makes the most money.

any other major suggestions?? i want something creative maybe in tv or movies, but also make money

Dr. Robert Rice
They go very hand-in-hand. I think that the average person in marketing would make more than the average person in advertising, but it depends on which company they end up in. An Anheizer (sp?) advertiser will make some bucks.

How about an answer from someone who graduated from college with a BFA in advertising?
I majored in advertising design and visual communication. I worked as an assistant for 2 summers for an ad agency and graduated and then became the art director for the same agency 2 years after that. If you have an advertising degree, you can join the creative department of almost any type of media company or business.
A marketing degree impies the analytical side of the business. One who does research into demographics and statistical area where you recommend promotions based on ROI and other factors. It's pretty dry stuff. I got to do some nice creative projects, made a good living, and never regretted the advertising degree.

Both are not worthless, its better than accounting. I would say major in marketing. But they are two different things so it really depends on what you want to do.

Marketing Diva
Here is a long answer to your question, but I feel I am qualified to answer!

If you want the one that makes the most money, then you should do marketing. I majored in communications during undergrad, then went to work at an agency. I spent 4.5 years working in advertising. The pay is very, very low (I started at 26K + overtime) and the hours are long (60+ a week.) That is the downside. The upside is that you will work with a lot of brilliant, fun young people and be given a lot of responsibility early on. You will need tough skin to deal with the creatives, clients and other people who will not tiptoe around issues or try to be PC. If you are interested in doing the creative side of the business (art direction, copy) then marketing will bore you to tears. There is money to be made in this industry, but you won't see it until you've been there for about 9 years or so (six figures + generous bonuses). By then, given the amount of responsibility and experience you will have, you may still be making less money than you feel you are worth!

Anyway, after 4.5 yrs in advertising, I enrolled in a top-10 MBA program to move over to the client side. This is definitely where the money is. When I graduate, I will automatically be making six figures, but working much better hours than before. Undergrads who choose to go into this field start at about $50K - significantly more $$ than agency life. However, it will take you a long time to get exposed to and have a say in the creative for your product, and it does not have the energy of an agency. Most of your job will be analytics - understanding trade sales, pulling Neilsen reports and doing budgets. (Marketing will teach you how to run a business.)

Long story short, if money is the priority - get a BBA in marketing and go work for a consumer packaged goods firm. After you make it to "brand manager" you can transition to another company and pursue other opportunities. If you'd like to prioritize the opportunity to be part of a creative field, then tough it out in advertising and wait for the cash reward for a bit. If you try out advertising and decide you want to switch to marketing, get your MBA and land a job at a CPG or services company - they will salivate over your advertising background!

Did u just mention something creative, then go for advertising, Advertising is a wonderful profession, it not only gives you the basic bread and butter but also a BMW, anyway coming to making money no doubt both are more money making there is more money in advertising and you can also start your advertising agency and hey the money depends upon how creative you are and how innovative you are, remember always creativity does not sell, i have a book by Philip Kotler "80 Marketing Insights any marketing manager should know", Probably i can send u the book if i get your email Id and we can stay in touch as i also have plans to major in marketing or advertising, Anyway make a good choice marketing is everything right from producing the product to developing to pricing and promoting and its a very challenging job, anyway Advertising is only a part of marketing but has its scope and functions, all the best and choose i think for creativity and thinking out of the box, u need to go in for advertising and marketing if u want to analyse the whole situation, choose wisely, all the very best

Thats really up to you, if you are going to college than you should pay for a degree that you love and have a passion for, money is great but it's not everything you don't want to have a job that you hate going to everyday. Take time to think about it. Hope you make a good choose and good luck in your future.
