What is more effective..pay per clicks or web traffic purchases?
I am trying to get traffic for my website and I just wanted to know what will be more likely to bring more traffic to my site.

I say exhaust every possible mean to get traffic. Use both -- and more. Just be careful of where you buy your traffic and avoid questionable sources (those that says "we'll give you 100,000 traffic for only $29.99")

"If you build it, they will come" is not necessarily true on the Web. Putting a website up is one thing, but getting visitors to come to your site is another. The process becomes even more difficult if you have limited resources to market your business.

You can try pay per click programs such as Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo Search Marketing http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com – though the key is to carefully track your ROI and which keywords actually perform well

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Big Nose Bird Recommend this Site http://bignosebird.com/carchive/birdcast.shtml
CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com's "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AhzreGmnCUicOoyedqypscUjzKIX?qid=1006022407481

6. Improve your conversion. Getting visitors is one thing; getting them to buy your products is a whole different story. Read the article "10 Ways to Convert Visitors to Buyers" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/072005/conversion.htm for tips on how to improve your conversion rates.

7. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com
Google Base http://base.google.com
Classifieds for Free http://www.classifiedsforfree.com/...
Text Link Exchange http://www.txtswap.com/
Recycler.com http://www.recycler.com/

I agree with the first reply... try every method. Make sure you employ even basic testing.

Pay per click can greatly pay off if you know how to write ads, know how to build long tail keywords lists, have a good conversion webpage etc.

At the same time, solo mailing ads, banner ads etc can be extremely profitable if you pick them right. The benefit of these is that they are a fixed cost. If you set the campaign up right, you could see well over 1000% ROI.

Neither beats out the other in terms of "effectiveness". What PPC does offer is instant results (traffic can be delivered just minutes after setting up the ads), very controlled testing and predictable results (after the initial testing).

I would say purchasing static links on pages would be more beneficial than doing the pay per click thing. In my experience the pay per click can get a bit shady as you never can be totally sure each click is a quality click. Even Yahoo is being sued by some that beleive they have misled the public and have been charging for fraudulent clicks. I've had much better luck finding related web sites with decent amount of traffic and either getting a good link exchange going or perhaps a popular blog may be kind enough to mention your site if its worthy enough. Anyway, my solution to the pay per click is my site The Eternal Wall http://wallaroundtheworld.com - we offer static spots on the page for the lifetime of the site.

I have found that some of my best traffic generators have come from the free resources that are available.

Write a press release and submit it to http://www.prweb.com

Write an article, or two, or three that is keyword rich and pertains to your website and submit it to http://www.ezinearticles.com

Post advertisments to the many free classified ad sites available online http://www.preferredpromoz.com/free-online-classifieds.html

Generally web traffic purchases are a waste of money so I would have to recommend pay per clicks - Adwords, Yahoo! or MSN first, until you're happy you make money this way, then try some of the other ppcse's

Google Adwords is good. You can also try with a blog like this http://entrepreneurs-link.blogspot.com/

You know what, bringing traffic on your site is not that easy nor it could happen fast. You need to have real patience on this. Have you tried everything from simply submitting your url to many directories and search engines to doing viral marketing of some sort?

There are no actual or valid marketing tactic, only that you need to experiment and combine two or more marketing efforts to really observe your site's traffic.

Also, marketing a site would really take some time so don't rush things over. First things first, you have to have your web stats in order to check for any developments. Normal rise of web traffic usually takes several hits higher than the previous month.

TIP: Do not go for PPC or any web traffic purchases for these are not really true. Better hire a web marketing/SEO expert to help you make traffic.

Good luck!

Mary
