What is the best/most powerful search engine?
I'm trying to build family tree without the expense! Whilst searching for family members I have noticed that information is available on some but not all search engines.
I'm member of Genes Reunited but have come to a grinding halt in my searches. Even finding family that is supposedly still alive has become difficult.
I suggest you Google..
Why?.. visit this for some info..

Currently Google is still the best.
There is a new search engine called Cuil (http://www.cuil.com/ ) that seems to minimalist but pretty fast. Cuil is actually a start up company founded by some ex-employees of Google. The Mormons have got a "thing" about geneology so you ought to check out the following link which may also be helpful: http://www.cuil.com/search?q=mormon+%2B+geneology .

Google is the biggest and most i guess powerful search engine created, anytime they feel in threat from somone else they simply buy them out - hence why there aren't that many successful search engines i can name about 5. There are other ways to find your family tree other then search engines though, your library will have information to help you and someone in there will be happy to help you search for things.

Google is the best search engine for generic queries, but for your specific tasks I'd try the social networks. Each has a search engine built in that may help you find the family members you are looking for.
I'd suggest starting with Facebook.com. There's even a plugin application called "We're Related" that lets you connect the dots of family members on facebook.
http://apps.facebook.com/we_r_related/
Next, try MySpace. There are still a lot of people using that site on a daily basis. You'll be surprised at the type of people you find there.
Classmates.com is geared towards finding alumni from schools you went too. However, it's also a great site for finding other people too. They just released a new version that makes it more friendly and more of a social network.
Finally, a really good people search engine (that is free) that I've had success with in the past is ZoomInfo.com
If you are still unsuccessful, try a google search for "find people" and try one of the paid services listed there. Some have fairly cheap pricing and can offer monthly memberships in stead of a "per search" charge.
