penyylane33 | What is the best way to go about getting a job out of state? |
I currently live in New York and am making a move to Boston. I cannot make the move without the job and my job search has been brutal. I am applying for jobs all across the board, hoping to end up with a job I'll actually enjoy but willing to take anything that'll pay rent/bills. I've been on my job hunt for a little over a month now, and still no interviews set up. I use craigslist, careerbuilder, monster, hotjobs...you name it, I've used it. Most of these sites are full of scams and you never really know if the job you're applying for is legit or some employer claiming to pay you top salary for a crap job. If anyone has any advice, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I am about to give up, and I don't give up easy. Thanks!! =)
p.s. I have a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts-Graphic Design. Strong interest in advertising/marketing. I have a ton of customers service/assistant/sales/business management/retail experience. |

First of all, I would do a search for the newspaper in the area that you are moving to, and begin with their business section - to see what businesses are in the area. Then do a websearch for the websites for those companies, and if any have an employment category then check it out and email your resume to them. You could also contact the Chamber of Commerce in Boston and see if they can send you info, and then contact businesses that are in their publications that they send you. At least you know then that the companies are legit.
Is there any chance of a visit before moving? That way you could go scope out the area for yourself. Maybe stop by a few businesses that you liked the
look of and ask if they would be interested in giving you a position?
I know you do not want to waste your education but since you seem like you really want this move, could you do it on a minimum wage job while you looked for something better? If so, then you could pick up a job at any of the fast food places, or as a waitress in a restaurant and use the time to make friends and network to find the job you are ultimately looking for.
You could also try to get hired for an online position such as 1-800-flowers who let you work from home doing customer service for them, and that job could move with you. |

Ten tips for effective job search - Your Guide to Job Search.
It is always important to make sure that all the bases, if you are in the middle of a job search. Sometimes we get so focused on one aspect of the work looks like the sending of applications, for example, that we forget to make sure that everything we do is professional, focused and appropriate. Review these ten tips for you to ensure that your job search is on the right track.
Ten tips for effective job search
First Impressions
Look, speaking and acting with professional help, a great first impression. Tory Johnson, Women for Hire
Find referrals rather than jobs
If you've got a friend that is running or working in you dreaming company, why should you find any job else? Just find him. ... Free Insiders Referral Network of Jobs - insidersreferral.com is strongly recommended.
Follow-Up
Do not be afraid, the follow-up. I instructed managers a customer more than a year after he first sent me back. I did not even have to apply if the position is available. In addition to me in his curriculum vitae, John had me every month or so to touch-and even more in my office (by the back door not by the receptionist), Easy to say hello.
Try more effective job sites
A good job website will save you too much time. Indeed.com is a good job search engine that I'd recommend.
Interviewing
Be on time for the interview. On time means five to ten minutes early. If necessary, take some time to attend the office ahead of time, so that you know exactly where you are going and how long it will take to get there.
Job Fairs
From time to time in these events, even if we are not necessarily looking for a job, to see what options there are, and to provide a perspective on where you are in the job market place. Tracey Miner, the advantage Mulitcultural
Keep Track
I have noticed that one of the most useful things that I started to keep track of everything I do. I use a simple spreadsheet program like Excel. And I do mean anything. I have a file where I see all the information from all the sites, which I join. Information such as the user name and password, which I created, what kind of tasks, it is - or freelance regular or specialty. Tracey Pederson, Jill of trades
Meaningful work
Discover your passion, identify a new direction, and take steps to a career that leaves and energetisiert enthusiastic. Curt Rosengren, passion catalyst
Thank you say
Try to send your thank-you note within 24-48 hours after your meeting or interview. The note is handwritten on a small, professional, thank you note card (if you have extremely clean handwriting, and only a brief message to convey), word-processed, or by e-mail.
Stay On Top of the News
Be aware of the latest business news in your town or city in which you wish to work. Read local magazines to find out who is on top in your industry. Check the business section of your local newspaper, as well. These resources will give you a sense for employers are "hot" contact information, how often to send your CV.
Your Resume
Write until it is correct. Think, write, think some more, rewrite, correction, you will get feedback and rewriting. Joyce Lain Kennedy, author Career
Do not Give Up
Last, but not least, do not give up. Job search is not easy and it is even harder when the job market is difficult. Keep plugging away in your job search, and finally, when there is more time consuming that you expect is the correct position. |

I've found out that there are certian points in your career where making a job change is difficult. You have some experience, but employers still don't want to pay you for it.
Anyway....what I would do is if you REALLY want to move, go to Boston and try and pick up a gig at like Crate and Barrell or something. If you have graphic design experience, start networking and give a shot a freelance work. I'm in Chicago and a lot of angencies here use creative freelancers all the time, and they get paid pretty decently.
Another alternative would be to talk to a temp firm in Boston. Sometimes if you get placed in the right company and put your best foot forward, they could ask you to come on full time. It's happened at places I've worked before, and it could also help with networking in a new city. Good luck! |

First of all since your question came up in the Jobs in Middlesex it threw me as I thought that middlesex was in UK. but what do I know...hers a small suggestion -- why dont you americans pick your own names for your towns instead of stealing ours? eh?
it gets stupid when i have to watch some US TV which is mostly crap apart from a few things (they're probably canadian anyway)amd you get some thicko come on and say from LONDON. ENGLAND (like where else?) its also like PARIS, FRANSS instead of Paris, frarnce......how mnay twns have you nicked by now god knows..we dont have Brooklyn, Hampsheer and not Hampshyre.....thank god .so why so that eh? you doint know do you...typical US thats why no one likes you you take over some country screw it up and re write its history look at Holloywood how many lousy remakes of european films have there been? too many and they all stink...give us our town names back and get yr own why do you want to do marjeting advertsing? that disreotable business that cons money out of people theres too much of that..look at the annoying popups on the net people hate that...do something honest use your graphic design know how to help out charitable organisations and local groups..that really need your skills -much more rewarding ..like leaflets that complain about some library being knocked down to build lousy luxury apartments on....why make money for people who already have more than enough? wheres the sense in that? go on i dare you..... |
