Here's some things I do to promote my website and all these techniques are free:
Write articles, submit them to article directories, with a link to your site in your resource box
Blogging is a big thing. Set up a blog for your site and post in it every day, and every time you update your blog ping it with ping-o-matic or pingoat. Of course have a link to your site in your blog for your visitors to see.
Exchange links with other sites similar to your site. Also submit your link to as many link directories as possible.
Post in forums related to your site, and have a link to your site in your signature file.
If possible, create a splash page about your site and promote that in traffic exchanges. This tends to be more successful than promoting your main site in traffic exchanges with my experience, since a splash page is short sweet and to the point, and captures the visitor's information.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg of what you can do for free advertising. |

viral marketing works. as does guerilla marketing.
make subtle postings about your site on forums whose subject relate to it. bring it up in conversations online. make a signature banner in your regular postings but dont talk about it.
blogspot.com is a good site which gets more ppl than myspace too. |

To do it right will take some time. A correctly balanced effort is a long-term commitment, will provide great results and is always worth the time.
The ideal way to go is:
1. Research Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This is the on-site effort that starts with keyword research (wordtracker.com) and includes placing the selected keywords into your site in places like the title, meta-description, meta-keywords tags. It doesn't stop there. The following places are also important to your website ranking:
- Calls to action and landing pages (very important). This assumes you want visitors to act - like purchase your product, complete the form for a lead...
- anchor tags (very important)
- h1, h2 tags (very important)
- body text content and keyword placement (very important)
- image alt tags
There are many more but too many to discuss here.
2. Internet Marketing. This is done after you have the site completed. This includes
- listing the site in search engines
- listing the site in directories
- determining which newsletters (ezines) would be best for your site then either advertise in them or write articles that they'll publish for free.
- write and distribute articles - you're the expert, right?
- write and publish press releases - you have an important event to let the world know about, right?
- look into social bookmarking as it is very hot now
- look into other forms of Internet marketing that might be appropriate like blogs, RSS, podcasting, videocasting, paid featured listings, craigslist.com (list your services), viral marketing, handy traffic, lists (can be huge), etc.
The list is virtually endless and you can spend a lot of time researching.
This is the shortest post I have ever written on the subject, but it should help in your efforts.
