Bake some samples and distribute them to the people that you do know. Word of mouth is the best advertisement. I have a small cake biz that I do from my home. I never intended to start a biz, but I made a friend's wedding cake and people just started calling me after that for cakes. See if there is a wedding expo or something like that in your area and try to get in on it with samples. |

There are a lot of free/cheap directory and yellow page services on the net. these are the first place where people usually look. the hometown website is a good place to be listed in or have a small logo. best luck!!! |

Word of mouth is the best advertising. Giving free samples to the right people can really be a boost to your business. For example, a good hair stylist has a great chance to spread the word about your cake.
If you could make an unusual cake or think of a special event to draw attention to your business, you may get free publicity from the local media.
You could make a deal with a business owner giving him a cut of your sales for placing flyers in his store.
Craigslist is free and you should post an ad their every 48 hours. |

newspapers are nice...but if your in a larger town try a "city search" website. thats where i go when i need to find something and i am pretty sure they let you add for free. Good Luck with your business!!!! |

My wife has been doing this. You need to have a network of people. like work associates, church, people you know getting married. people with small children you could direct mail or call on. print advertising is very expensive and probably not a good return for you need to go right to the source . A small website could help for people to see your work. start one for free first

Because marketing is truely an art form I wouldn't suggest that there is a "best way", however there are some basics. Two forms of advertising...direct and creative. Direct is considered the phonebook. Why?? Because it's used when people are ready to buy, thus directing them to your product or service. Second is creative.....which includes every other form of advertising. TV, radio, newspaper, billboards, internet, bus stop benches, flyers, direct mail, car magnets, the mobile ad truks and so on. Creative because they all are used to create an intrest, brand your name, or cause a potential customer to remember you instead of your competition. In other words when the customer is ready to buy all of the creative ways will help a potential client to remember you..........Soooo Your advertising should be a combination of both. Look at advertising like a fishing net....internet advertising will only get you the fish that 1....swim in that pool and 2 only those that have a need for your service or product while in that pool. For your business I'd consider several factors. 1...How your market thinks. IE...Will gas prices affect how customers buy, or do clients buy seasonally...ect.....2...Where is your business coming from...IE word of mouth, or from trade shows...3 How much business can you effeiently service.....IE if your advetising campaign generated 20 new monthly leads are you staffed for that, enough materias.......ect...4...What is your advertising budget......5...What ROI-Return On Investment-Do you want?? Spending 50 monthly?? How many sales are you getting above the 50 monthly for a hefty return?? I'm sorry for the novel but I hope it offers a little direction. |

Are you a small business? There are different free ways you can accomplish this. You have craiglists, and the local index.
I'm not too sure if this is what you were referring to. While most responses were also good. I Would suggest The Local Index. It provides a free and simple online solution to local people and businesses that allows them gain a competitive advantage .thelocalindex (dot) com provides a clear approach to the problem by providing a free website to local business where they can showcase their products and services online.
One Advice though, do not become another listing in an endless directory. While being a listing has it’s benefits, for prospective customers that has never heard of your company (i.e. new home movers) easily get turned off and go to where they can find the item i.e. Wal-Mart, Applebee’s, or Hair
Cuttery. It’s a fact that 70% of people search online for PRODUCTS and SERVICES locally before anywhere else. Think about it, when using Google or Yahoo which do you type “Philadelphia or Chicago restaurant” or “restaurant” and wouldn’t it be nice to actually see a menu or the
store’s inventory?
While most the clients already have a website it provides a clear approach to local marketing.

I'm also starting my own business and marketing has been, well, stressful! i've read about few books about the issue and the two i've found most helpful have been "Guerrilla Marketing" by Jay Conrad Levinson and "Cluetrain" by four authors. Cluetrain is available free online as well as at Amazon. Here's the link to the online version: http://www.cluetrain.com/book/index.html - i'd recommend skipping the forward, etc. and start at ch. 1.
both books are amazing! i hope they're as helpful to you as they have been for me.

Hey there! Just put out flyers throughout the town. Place them where most people would maybe go to get party supplies and things like that. Also, post an add in your newspaper. Those should generate you a small client base and it could go from there! |
