Marketing is the "PROCESS"
Sales is the "TACTIC"
Sales is part of marketing. You can reengineer the whole sales and marketing process to create the clients you want.
Marketing is everything you do to get a client and keep them.
It involves creating a message to market match through the right media.

about as simple as I can get is..."Sales" is the sale of an item or service. "Marketing" is the research of "where" one can get those sales and the promotion and advertising of that product or service in that market to GENERATE "Sales"

Tricky question.
In older text books sales and marketing are completely different.
In modern definitions Marketing has come to mean the process of designing, advertising, delivering and selling a product. So now it includes even logistics. I agree that all these things are not seperate, but including in marketing is not helpful.
But you should be aware of the changes in definition.
Personally I use Marketing to mean, the process of planning how to sell a product. Includes the market orientated aspects of design, promotion and things that aid sales.
Sales is the process of actually making a sale. That is, where the product is given to a customer in exchange for something, usually money.
Definitions are for academics who couldn't do business and so don't really understand it. They cut up everything and label it and pretend that this understanding is actually useful.
