All of the previous answers offer good info....an example from my business follows which is more "real life"
When you sign the application & write a check for insurance from me.....THAT is sales!!
A week later when I send you a card thanking you for your business w a free long distance card attached...THAT is marketing.
Sponsoring a local youth sports team is marketing.
Being active in a local charity or the chamber of commerce is marketing, tho I never try to actually sell anything.
Anything which portrays you or your business in a positive way is a form of marketing.

Sales: The exchange of goods or services for an amount of money or its equivalent; the act of selling.
marketing: The commercial functions involved in transferring goods from producer to consumer.
so basically selling is actually the exchange of cash for product and marketing is all the advertising and promotion of the product before it sales. |

In simple terms, the marketing function is there to interest potential customers in a business message, provide leads for the sales function and add perceived value to the activities of the business. Sales exists to convert potential customers into actual business, to maximise revenue from a customer and to create a relationship between customer and business (through account/relationship management).
In reality, many companies blur the lines between sales and marketing, intentionally or otherwise, often to create better sounding jobs or because the business is driven by short-term goals and tactics, not longer term strategies. For many reasons, sales is seen as the 'dirtier' function, although this should not be the case. Marketing is often seen as the more 'woolly' function since qualitative and quantitative results are traditionally harder to come by.
There are many specialisms in both areas - direct marketing and direct sales being two examples.

Marketing is an all-inclusive term that encompasses all aspects of getting a product from the factory to the end consumer. Some aspects of Marketing include packaging, pricing, advertising, SALES, promotions, public relations, sponsorships, distribution, etc.
Sales is specifically a process by which the seller tries to influence the consumer to purchase his product or service. Sales can include advertising, public relations, promotions and other factors...but does not usually enter the picture until the market research, product development, manufacturing, packaging, and distribution functions have all been handled.
