mika | What is the difference between competences and capabilities? |
How do these make a difference to stategic positioning? Additional Details I want the answer based on marketing area. |

I think you mean the difference between strategic assets and core competencies. Competencies and capabilities from a strategic positioning perspective are close to the same thing.
Strategic assets are resources that a company owns. There are many resources that can be valueable such as cash, trademarks, property, patents, brands and key employees. For example, Microsoft has $40B in cash so it is an asset. Pepsi, the brand, is an asset.
Core competencies/capabilities is something a company can do well. For example, P&G has best-in-class marketing competence. Southwest Airlines offers a short-haul, low-cost, point-to-point service between mid-size cities.
Strategic positioning means performing unique activities from rivals' or performing those activities in more effective or efficient way in order to provide customers greater value or comparative value at lower cost, or do both.
It is difficult to compete solely on core competencies over the long-term. Strategic assets are meaningless unless they can used to create greater value for customers. Companies want to use their strategic competence to leverage their strategic assets so that it can create a unique advantage over the competition. |

Is the question not, " Whats the difference in using a search engine & not using one ? "

Competencies are PROVEN abilities. Capabilities are simply IMPLIED abilities. (What strategic positioning? In sex, is that?) |

Its simple, really - capabilities are the services that a marketing company are able to offer to clients; competencies are the ones that they are best at. |

i got a business from a guy who had 22 years in the business.
he had a great rep. he was sick, couldn;t deliver.
i hate the biz don't want to deliver, but deliver a superior product.
i will give him the biz back. he knows the biz, but is weak and cannot deliver as he used to , because the industry has changed
comp, no cap; comp good cap; cap not comp |

Many people are capable of doing many things, but few are competent. |

Capable means you are able to do something.
Competent means you can do it well.
For example, you might be able to pick up a guitar and make sounds- you are capable of playing, but not necessarily competent.
If you can play music on the guitar you are competent. |

In that order - what you can do / what you can do well.
Basically. |
