yes, you're right. this has something to do with marketing.
when you give discounts to customers, they would have a tendency to keep on buying from you since they feel that they "save" in a way, when they buy in discount prices (discounts entice customers to buy from you). also, thru discounts, customers tend to buy "more" than what they are supposed to buy. lastly, as we can observe, stores which offer discounts have a lot of customers at a time compared to other stores who don't offer much. |

This question is a little too broad to be answered easily. Discounts are given for a variety of reasons. In all cases, it's to attract customers into the store, and hopefully to return again. It's all about attracting customers and maintaining customer satisfaction.
Here's a list:
1) to draw in customers, retailers have sales offering discounted prices, or rebates.
2)As a customer service issue, some retailers will give a discount for damaged or incomplete items. Say, a customer buys a product that's damaged, they might get a discount... or other do it for opened box merchandise. The intent is to either make the customer happy with his retail experiance by making them believe they got a value for their money.
3) Retailers often do price matching, discounting their price on an item to match a competitor's so as not to lose the sale.
4) Retailers will sometimes give discounts to satisfy unhappy customers. For example, a customer may have been told ont he phone that a certain color chair was in stock, and they came to get it only to find they were told in error. Some stores might sell them another similiar chair for a slight discount. The effect is to make the customer happy and leave the store happy, rather than angry.
5) Discounts for mass purchases. A store might give a discount to someone who buys a lot of items for a large sum of money. This could be done for a variety of reasons, but most commonly as an incentive to complete the sale. Car dealerships will often do this.

It can help to build a client base. The problem is that they will go out and tell their friends who will expect the same deal. If you work on a commission basis however, your best bet is to impress them with your product knowledge and customer service. |

It is very customer friendly.And if there is a reason the cusomter should have it,it should be given to him/her. It also will keep the business of that person. It also can make a person feel special in which case if he or she feels you were doing something like that for them they will tell others where the best place is too shop (not nessaserily say the company hands out discounts) ,But in short...that person just may the one to keep your company in business. |
