math and algebra are in every profession , advertising you have to pay for whatever you are advertising , you have to work with a budget , you have to figure out if it is worth the cost for the product you are selling , you have to form focus groups and take detailed notes and compare stats . and once you get paid you have to pay your bills while budgeting for necessities |

you dont need to understand the theories or the concepts behind the math, but you do need to understand the APPLIED aspects of it. ie. how to calculate your demographics for x month. |

Sophisiticated marketers get into multivariate analysis. Google for "Taguchi" and you'll see.
Also there's a whole industry called database marketing that's basically built around analyzing huge databases of information about customers to learn more about them, how to sell, what to sell, who else to sell to, etc. Very math-driven. |

That depends on the focus in advertsing. If you are actually leaning towards marketing, algebra and stats will come in handy. If your are a sales agent trying to get the agency another account, your algebra skills are not probably going to kill you if your not algebra savvy.
Just remember, most big agency now have specialists, staff members, or subcontractors that will use specialized software to crunch numbers and mine data.
Overall, you need a good basis in math to perform any job. Do not stress over any perceived lack of algebra or stats knowledge. In advertising in general, your best skills are still going to be able to sell, communicate effectively, and be creative. |

Of course that counts for every proffession.
But in advertising it is more important because you need to calculate statistics and determine dominant markets for your product. |

that's a strange question.
I am an art director, i need to do very basic math for color break-downs and print/production sizes.
you also need to time tv and radio spots... but that is hardly math..
aside from that, unless it plays into your concept, we hire enough production people that i don't need to deal with camera/video problems... or print problems...
so i guess... not much... which is a shame, because i used to be good at it... |
