A "bench mark" is a quantified measurement at a certain point of time.

It is usually spelled as one word, "benchmark".

For example, inflation is a benchmark standard and is used later as a method of comparison.

The origin of the word is thought to come from carpentry. A workbench would be measured for its height. After that, all other measurements would be based on the height of the original bench...thus a benchmark.

Used to mean literally a mark on a bench used for standard measurements. Now just means a standard.

In advertising benchmark usually is a great ad that the client wishes it were his own. It happens every other time:
Client: Guys, here's the ad for X brand. It's damn great. It's your benchmark for this campaign. I want you create exactly the same ad, but you have to rework it completely so noone would realise we've stolen the idea.
We: Sure. No problem. Let's see what we got here... Hey! Isn't it a clone of the idea we created two years ago!? Thiefs!

its a certain point....ie. half time...reaching a goal somewhere before the finish line...only after some major hurdle. basically a half milestone...like a resting point...then you go for the long haul...overdrive and make it to the finish line....
