Eleanor | What kind of results does negative advertising achieve? |
Do you think that advertising a product/service by negatively highlighting a competitors features/benefits will achieve the kind of results expected?
For example:
An auto/truck manufacturer airs 2 commercials that highlight optional features that are available on their competitors products but not available on their product. Do these ads affect the auto/truck manufacturer positively or negatively?
#1 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGI8IRXRqpo&feature=related )
This commercial shows an optional step-ladder that folds out of the tailgate to allow a person to easily climb into the bed of a pick-up truck without stepping over the tailgate. This feature enables a person to load/unload the bed of the truck with ease and efficiency.
#2 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cagPZOAtZp4&feature=related )
This commercial shows an optional heated steering wheel which can be used in cold weather to make driving/steering the vehicle more comfortable without putting on gloves.
Both commercials highlight competitor "options" that are not available on the advertised product. Neither commercial shows optional features that are exclusive to the product that is advertised.
Both commercials are aired during televised sports events.
In your opinion, How do these 2 commercials affect the perception of the 3 vehicles/manufacturers? |

Chevrolet is trying to go after the Alpha male.. the one who thinks the truck should be tough and by showing the features in a unflattering light they are trying to get those people to look at those features as unmanly because they don't have it on their trucks... what's easier, build the part or advertise that it's for sissies.
Actually, It may have the opposite affect for some buyers as a few people I know who own trucks and use them as trucks complain all the time about getting into the bed of the truck and would welcome that....
So these ads were mainly aimed at Sports and outdoor people who take more from advertiser peer pressure influence than from actual comparison shopping
But all the manufactuers will do this and that to make their product tops over the competitor including the imports, so basically the most it does for me is show me that Chevy is using influence to try to out maneuver a competitor instead of real product |

Actually, I laughed my backside off watching them. (OK I own a Silverado, the real "MANS" truck). But being the guy that needs the "step" (clumsy as I am) I might actually look for that next time around!
Not sure the affect the add has, it does point out reasons "not to have" features - LOL!
I wouldn't pay extra for either of those items - cheap wins!
Kind of like saying - "you want cheese with that burger - go somewhere else!" Hey - I want the MANS burger but only if its under a buck! |

In watching both ads, I see a common theme. Do you want glitz, glitter and gingerbread, or do you want a tough truck?
By highlighting the "toys" on the competition and the basics on the Chevy, the ad focuses on the target audience The target of the ad is the man who does not want to be seen as a "girly-man" or a wimp, and these ads reach that target.
I do not see this as negative advertising, rather as focusing attention on the different features, and trying to show your product in the best light. They do not change my views of the manufactures or their products at all. |

I suspect these guys know their target market ;]
Whilst I find negative ads insulting [unless properly humerous] it seems that a certain proportion of people do fall for them.
making the opponents vehicle something of ridicule is not their aim - they want to make the viewer think people will think they are idiots for buying the other product! |

Question
What kind of results does negative advertising achieve?
It turns me off to the product if it seems staged or exaggerated. Like those infomercials and commercials where everyone is made to look like a bumbling idiot and the smallest task turns into a major inconvenience.
These ads are along those lines. It's like saying, "hey we don't have those features and you look really stupid when you use a vehicle that does have them." It makes them look petty and like they've pretty much given up! |

Hello dear. Well, I cannot really take this as negative advertising.
I take this as a very childish type of advertising. Obviously General Motors Corp has nothing better to think up and it kinda makes me giggle because how stupid do you gotta get to sell your product.
This is a MAN'S Truck Commercial and if General Motors was smart then they should have put a real looking man instead of a pretty boy.
Sex dont sell trucks. |

It gains a lot from the weak minded but for those who demand documented facts, not so easy. Unfortunately the biggest part of our society is sheep. |

99% of the time I don't buy what is advertised.
If I was going to buy a pickup, I'd buy the best - A Toyota Hilux. |
