Loss leaders: where they sell a specific item at a loss to get you into the shop so you buy other items at a damn good profit ! |

Supermarkets have the "attractive" fresh fruit and veg near the front - it's supposed to create a welcoming ambiance. The same thing with the coffee shop if they have one.
And the bakery's near the back where the smell of baking bread can waft throughout the store.
There's a technique too of moving stock around from time to time so you don't get used to going directly to where you want, but have to hunt around and pass by other stock on the way, hopefully tempting you to buy something you hadn't intended to. |

1. If it's children store, they put enticing items at the cash register. McDonald's(restaurant store)...toys in meals.
2. They put a item that they are pushing on a separate island or on the end of isle.
3. They advertise (offer) a discount.....50% or more attracts me.
4. Buy 1 get one free!.....Safeway here I just bought buy 2 get one free. It was soda and I did the math work and it turned to be a deal(soda diet coke).
5. They have midnight sales. People go to Wal-Mart as a outing now.
6. They also open early. For instance 5am!
7. They cut a junky item down, they when you get in the store, they have one that maybe a few dollars higher, but have more amenities.
8. They have the store produce item a few dollars lower than the name brand item.
9. Service and support.
10. Location, Location, Location. (7-eleven) as oppose to going across town. |

Hi
It really depends on what product(s). First you need to decide who is your target customers. Is it for a specific age group etc.
Is it a niche product? The product placement in the store, catchy products. There are many marketing strategies to lure customers in.
If you send me details, I can help you.
Thanks

Loss leaders. Bread is a favourite. Put bread on sale at a reduced price, get the punter in the store and they'll buy other stuff.
Putting sweeets at the checkout for pester power, kids on parents.

aiming their advertisments at children (pester power) and organsing the store so that customers see the goods that would ususally be an after thought!! i.e chocholate bars right near the till so you cant miss them!! |

In store presentation such as arranging displays by putting similar colors together, or putting expensive items at eye height and cheaper items lower etc etc.
Haven't you noticed in supermarkets that the branded items are right in front of you where as the "no label" items are above or below. |

I've heard that they employ all sorts of tactics right down to the size of floor tiles they use in certain areas of the floor. The closer together the tiles are the faster it makes it seem you are pushing your trolley so you slow down. In theses areas they place items they want you to buy (possibly more expensive/luxury items) and because you have slowed down its more likely you will look at them and buy them! In areas of the shop with day to day stuff/buget items they place the floor tiles further apart so you move faster through them. This can also stop congestion in these areas too. |
