The business activity of presenting products or services to potential customers in such a way as to make them eager to buy. Marketing includes such matters as the pricing and packaging of the product and the creation of demand by advertising and sales campaigns. |

The answer depends on who you ask.
Marketing helps the consumer understand which products and services best meet their needs.
Marketing helps organizations reach out and find new customers, and build better relationships with existing ones.
Marketing is important because it's the tool that allows companies to drive their own destiny. If they just wait for people to find their stuff (i.e., engage in sales without marketing), they'll be reacting to the market, instead of pro-actively positioning themselves in it.
Companies that don't market effectively get stuck competing on price... and there is almost always someone willing to sell for less.
But remember that for all the good that marketers do, it's the folks in sales that make the most money, and have the best parties...

Marketing is all aspects of delivering a product or service from production to the final user. It begins with the conception of the product or service, and continues until the product is exhausted with the final user. |

Presenting a product, service, or idea to people with the intention of getting something from them (buying it, donating to it, etc...)
Or as I like to define it...
Convincing others that they want or need something that you want them to need or want even if they have no use for it. |

Marketing is a wide range of things. First it is getting your product or service noticed. If you market it properly you'll gain market share and a customer base- then it moves to maintaining that market share while still gaining more. Marketing is ongoing- it is product development, advertising, customer service, etc. etc.
Poor marketing= no business |
