Are you aware there are several computer programs that do this??? If you have the money and can afford to invest in a good design, then having one done for you by a respected, established graphic arts company is good advice. But if not, I'd check out these programs and tweak some of their pre-sets. I have one on my other puter and darned if I recall the name now. But I'm sure you can find it on Google, etc. The quality is good, not great. But if you have a good eye and take your time, you can come up with a pretty good substitute to a professionally done one. But it will be a million times better than trying to do it on your own!
Whatever you do, make sure it looks professional, with clean lines (was gonna say no pun intended but hey it's an ok pun so what the heck lolol). Seriously, you want to make it eyecatching but simple. Font choice can make a major difference if you do it yourself.

ETA;
some of the advice given here isn't necessary unless you plan to have all your forms/letterhead professionally done. Even then any camera ready art will work, regardless of Adobe or not.
One question I didn't ask is how big a business is this and who will you be serving? If you are focusing on large companies it is very important to get a sharp image together. If you are looking to serve mid-size/smaller ones you just need a good, clear logo. And if you do go to an agency be sure to first see samples that have been used by a client, and to get a quote. Easy business to rip off folks in nowadays, so be careful (half these folks are using the programs I told you about....so if you are paying for hand drawn image insist on seeing all production sketches!). |

Best to focus on getting the business running profitably consistently. That is your number one priority. Create any basic logo and run with it. If you get to be successful you can then have the luxury of buying good help. Regarding 'image' if this is a graphic, follow the same idea. If by "image" you mean "persona" or "how the firm acts in the marketplace" again focus on doing the business consistently, responding quickly to any complaints - doing good business is still the best advertisement. |

First impressions are priceless and it will be worth the investment. The logo on a business card, letterhead, website, or ad will be the first impression potential customers may see of your business.
If you look organized in your presentation it will make your value and price easier to sell.

It does not take much money to develop a professional image. Although image is not everything, it definitely sets the tone for your business. Why do it later? If you believe in the business you are starting, you are going into it with the assumption that it will stay alive. Do it right the first time. There are all kinds of ways you can get creative and have a professional image created very inexpensively or even free. I work for a sign company (www.completesigns.net). We have 2 graphic designers on staff, and often provide their services to our clients for a reduced or free price if we are doing the sign package for the business. We are also open to trading services. You could also go to a local college and form some type of contest..PR for you and a great opportunity for an up and coming designer. |

Have a professional design your logo. It will be a little money but it will be well worth it.
A logo over years if done right will give you brand recognition. So it pays to invest if you have the extra capital.
Advertisingmediaworks did the one on poetryscriber for me and it came out excellent. They also did my web page which turned out great!
