It's American marketing -- goes way back. The merchant would price something for $1.99 -- he gives up a penny in the hope that the Buyer will think $1 rather than $2.
Apparently it works, because it's been around since the 19th century, and with all the Business majors and MBA's and marketeers we have in this country, they still do it.

It is a psychological trick
Real Estate Guy
Because people believe that .99 is a better deal the 1.00.

It's all psychological in nature. It's the same reason why car dealers will advertise a car as $24,999.99 instead of $25,000. One simply SOUNDS better than the other. (Gas sells in this area for $3.149 --- not $3.15 ($0.001 per gallon difference! That's even worse!!!)

makes people believe it's better-cheaper...eventhough it's only a cent!!! it still works to grab some people in to the whole selling thing..like shopoholics...any sale, they're there! even acent matters for those people.

when people see the .99 they don't see it as much money at simple site. For example, if there is a chocolate bar and it costs 1.99 people say oh that is not that much. If it said 2.00 they would think it's too much money. It's weird how that 1 cent makes a difference.
