I just had my house painted by a guy that put a flyer on my door. He was targetting my neighborhood and had references. His prices were good and he didn't ask for money until the job was done, which made him more trustworthy to me (I'm not implying that you aren't, but there are enough contractors out there that require deposits and you never see them again that they can ruin it for everyone else). He was young and drove an old beat up car with a ladder strapped to the top, but he worked very hard and did an awesome job which is the best advertising. I've already had him back to paint the inside and have recommended him to others.

When someone moves into a new home that needs painting or is tired of peeling paint, they will go to the Yellow Pages first.
I had many home remodelers, roofers, and painters that had NO other ads besides those in the Yellow Pages and did very well.
The YP have ads of all sizes, the book never gets thrown out and you get the best ROI or return-on-investment. It's far above newspaper or direct mail.
I am retired and have nothing to gain by lying.
The Yellow Pages is the best media for a business like yours.

If you drive, go get one of the big magnets that are printed with your company logo and stick it to the side or back of your car as you drive around. Make sure to take it off and put it inside the car when you are parked somewhere. People like to steal those things.

Nothing beats refereals and proof.

There is many good answers here, however i would recomend that you advertise through your customers. Ask if you could place a small board after you completed the job. The boad should be nice and simple perhaps saying
" Another house painted by House Painting Inc . 555-3456" or something along the lines.

Offer you customer warranty for the painting job for maybe a year of 5 as long as the board is there.

Be Different from your competitor

Diferenciate and let the market know. You will need to go beyond the I paint houses. You need to be better than the competition. Perhaps the first idea will work or you. It can be service, speed, warranty, cost, ect.

Then you advertise. I would prefer targeted area then mass advertisement. You can not possibly handle 1000 houses at one time so avoid newspapers. Try fliers and a time limited promotion. Speak to the neighbourhood opinion maker/association ect. Then do fliers for a time limited promotion. By having a base camp in one area , you save resources and maximise productivity. Decorate your base came into a roadshow like promo. This will encourage free newspaper adverts and this is not only cheaper but can be repeated in other location.

To hasten it send out press release to the newspapers, radio station ect. Pro bono work, like painting orphanages, hospitals, civic center can also aid in getting customers as well as free ads.

If you need to raise money to cover cost, ask the chairity org to help raise some money to fund the project. This alone is spreading your business and advertising.

Newspaper ads on Sundays are great! Don't miss the opportunity to get a metal magnet sign for your vehicle...it makes your vehicle a write off on taxes ya know. Advertising is a write off as well.

[Note: do not include the quotes (").] Again, this is a very generic query. Then hit Enter. In a moment or two, there will appear some 1.44 million search results and among the TOP 10 rankings will be a website called "Welcome to Downtown Los Angeles."

At our painting company we find direct mail to actually work well. Postcards are cheap to send out and just people seeing your name once a month is enough to get them to call. We do mostly commercial work, but they are also pretty effective for residential business. I suggest a big logo so all they really have to do is glance at it, coupons work well too.
