When a customer complains, they are unhappy and they want to be treated with respect. Listen to what they say, repeat it back to them, and offer a solution that you believe will make both of you happy. Sometimes, a monetary discount of 10% will make a customer happy. Other times, you need to give them their money back. By letting them know that you are on their side, you will keep them as customers.

You must keep in mind that this customer saw or heard your advertising and invested his/her money and time in your product. Something has failed, either they have an unreasonable expectation (based on your advertising), your product doesn't work as advertised, or your product failed.
You have a duty to make sure that your product lives up to your advertising and reasonable expectations of that product.
If you are unable to communicate with this customer, then the problem will never be resolved except with a vow from the customer to NEVER buy your product or service again. It may seem like you have plenty of customers now and don't need them, but the way to make sure you always have them is to make it right. You may have to go a little over board in fixing the problem, but in the end the good will generated will far out value the small cost in solving the problem.
This advice is given from a person who will NEVER again shop at Sears, buy a General Motors product, or use the services of ATT or Verizon as long as a viable opportunity exists. Cheat me once, shame on you, cheat me twice, shame on ME. |
