Of course everyone is right in saying "word of mouth." If you are a new business, it's hard to start "word of mouth" if no one knows your business exists. If you have a web site, I suggest you approach other web site owners (related to children's products or topics related to children,) and request a reciprocal link. You may also want to look for "local community" web sites and post an ad on their site. Often it's free for businesses if they are located within the community.
Flyers work too. You can print your own and post them on community mail boxes, and in places like grocery stores, and laundromats.

Superior customer service to start with. The best advertising is a satisfied customer. Great window displays, not overcharging for your product. Being a childrens merchandise store, have an area that children can play in so parents can spend more time shopping. Advertise in your local rag with maybe a 10% discount coupon. Have customer feedback forms in store so customers can leave their email address and you can then have them on an email list for new products/specials. A signboard out on the streetside for visibility. And tell absolutely everybody that you talk to what you do and where you are. So they in turn can tell someone else. |

The first most effective and efficient form of advertising is word of mouth. Nothing can replace that. Make sure it is word of good mouth and not of bad mouth. Target your audience by aiming towards meeting as many parents as you can. Consider getting your name out there with active non-profit agency affiliations like conduct a clothing drive for used clothing to donate to homeless shelters, Red Cross, etc. While people are in your store to donate, they will be captive in seeing what new fashions you have. Keep your pricing reasonable but make sure you price enough to make a profit to cover your overhead. Many businesses think that price is most important... it's not. Branding is extremely important. What's the difference between Coach purses and those at Walmart??? Image. Learn to balance. I found a great book called "Marketing Without Money" by Nicholas E Bade ... check your library. The book boasts 300 tips on advertising your business, online and offline. What on earth do you have to lose by checking it out??? Get your name out there with affiliations to your Chamber of Commerce, Merchant Associations, Better Business Bureau, etc. |

Help jumpstart word of mouth with a booth at any local events in your area, such as fairs and expos with a relevant audience.
Your local newspaper may have inexpensive advertising programs available to you. Many papers have a "business builder" program that will reward regular, consistent advertising, not necessarily big ads, with a lower rate.
But remember that no type of advertising, whether it's word of mouth, newspaper or radio or whatever, can SELL anything. Once you have driven traffic to your store, then it's your time to let your merchandise and customer service shine to get repeat business!

Of course word-of-mouth is the best. Join your local Chamber of Commerce to find more people who are interested in your product. Day care centers, pre-schools, a personal invitation to see your products, like a trunk show at a local hotel...hotel folks have kids too. A small toy, like the bath tub duck with your name, phone, email and or web site as giveaways. Good luck with your enterprise. |

Has anyone mentioned a good sign? Good signage (only if you have a storefront or a vehicle that could advertise for you) is well worth the investment. Unlike most other advertising, it works for you
24-7 and all year long. It tells people not only who you are , but what you do and develops your business image. But don't make the mistake of doing one yourself (unless youre well qualified) because a bad sign is A BAD SIGN and will hurt your business. |
