A good search engine is one which is more user friendly, gives most relevant results for user query, less time consuming for providing results and provide lot more suggestions (results).
If a search engine has these quality then this would be the best one.
I consider primarily Google.com satisfies the above considerations and if i could not get a better result here then i move out for Yahoo, Live and etc.

i would say google (google.com) is the best,
otherwise:
altavista.com
yahoo.com
live.com
ask.com
or, if you want, search (!) "search engine" in a search engine, it will give you loads of ones to try
hope that helps!

It's this massive usability edge that keeps Google on top. If another search engine showed up with better usability than Google people would start switching. Remember AltaVista anyone? It was the dominant search engine of it's time, and then Google came along and showed how easy search could really be and everyone switched.
