In 1997, Amazon.com launched the concept of affiliate programs into prominence (they weren't the first, but they were the first to do it big-time!). For the one person on the Net who doesn't know, Amazon sells books (and tons of other merchandise now) online... and only online.

Books, of course, offer information on millions of different specialized subjects. And there are millions of Web sites out there, on an incredible variety of subjects.

So Amazon figured, "Why not convert those sites into specialized, niche book shops for us? We'll pay a commission when a site refers a customer who buys a book."

And that's how Amazon started one of the first affiliate programs (AKA associate or referrer programs).

Here's how an affiliate program works, using Amazon as the example...

The affiliate provides links from his site to certain books on the Amazon site, books that are related to the affiliate's site content. Amazon uses special software that tracks who sends each visitor. If and when the visitor buys, Amazon pays the affiliate a commission.

The affiliate never has to...

* write a book

* process an order

* ship a book

* answer customer support e-mails.

And the same applies to any product that is sold in this way... CDs, travel, domain names, even sheep!

Affiliate marketing is where you sell goods from other merchants straight to consumers and make a commission. There are a great number of affiliate marketing networks that you can join. They will provide you with merchants and their products that you could sell.

You don't even need a website (but this would be the best way of doing it). You could send links to your friends and family. You can add links in most forums in your signature line. Don't spam as people will not tolerate this.

You could pretty much sell anything under the sun. Just do a Yahoo search for "affiliate program". And you will find a great number of merchants who will be happy to sell goods and services for them.

The best way to start is to come up with a niche (or theme) that youâ€™re passionate about. So for example, if you're into dogs, why not setup a blog about canines or be even more specific just on Golden Retreivers. Put affiliate offers related to dogs products or Golden Retreivers (basically ads) on the sides for your readers to buy from you.

Do enough of these type of mini niche sites, and you'll have checks coming in â€“ in no time.

Remember don't spam. Always provide useful and valuable content to your user. And they will thank you by making purchases through your site. And it becomes a win-win situation.

This can easily be done from the luxury of your home. Beware of get rich schemes. Most programs that require to put money up front are usually scams. All that I mentioned about are basically free. They (the affiliate networks) pay you and not the other way around with no startup cost. Only funds needed is to get a reputable hosting company to host your website/blog. And I mentioned a good one which only cost $10/month. Yes, there are even cheaper hosting companies and some are even free. But trust me with the amount of research that I've done. And all the headaches that I went through with other companies. The company I mentioned above is not perfect. But for $10/month, what do you have to lose.

It's not easy to make money from home. But it can be done. With your time and low start up cost, you have the potential to make a decent living. I know because I already do. Best of luck.

Simply put, It is where another company pays you to advertise. Easy way to make money if you're good with people.

For Instance---
Company XYZ needs people to go to it's site to make money.

Typically, Company XYZ will give you a website such as
JaneDoe.CompanyXYZ.com

And when people go to your site, and purchase something, or signup with a paying membership, let's say for instance, the total cost is 200.00

Well company XYZ offers a 25% commission on that product or membership.

Company XYZ will then pay the commission of 50.00 for that particular item to you for you getting that person to sign up or purchase something on the site.

This way, company XYZ does not have to pay massive fee's for television, internet ads, newspapers, etc.

Kind of like Word of Mouth marketing, also known as viral marketing.

Affiliate marketing is all about selling the products of others and getting a commission in return.

Affiliate marketing is basically where you advertise somebody else's website in exchange for a commission if your visitors buy anything. The technique you would use are pretty the same as you would if you were promoting your own website.

There are two ways to promote affiliate programs - free and paid. While many people have many money using free techniques, I honestly think it's a little sloppy. The technique that many "super affiliates" use is through pay per click. The concept behind that is to make more money than what you invest into it. Let's say you were promoting a ringtones affiliate program and earned $16 commission for each person you referred to the program. If it costed you $8 to make the $16 commission you basically doubled your money. If you can scale that by 1,000 times you would basically be making $8,000 a day!
