Emma | Whats the difference between a client and a customer? |
Say if you are designing a product for a company to sell, and you have the company, and then the people the company are going to sell the product to. Which is the client and which is the customer? |
|

The company paying you to design the product is your client. The person they're selling their products to is their customer.
Different professions have different customary terms for the consumers of their products and/or services. You'll see customer, client, patient, guest, patron, etc. used to indicate the consumer. It's all the same person, but the customs of the particular profession or industry dictate what term they use. The medical profession uses "patient" mainly. Retailers usually use "customer." Marketing and advertising use "client." Since marketers also have to refer to the consumers of the client's products, they use a different term for those people. |

Client: One that is under the protection of another
Customer: One that purchases a commodity or service
A. Clients are relationship-based. They are long-term associations. Effort must be expended to cultivate a client relationship.
B. Customers are transaction-based. They are transient, mercurial associations. Either party can and often does sever the relationship suddenly and at convenience.
Here's the distinction:
In a client / vendor relationship, the buyer is "under the protection" of the vendor and becomes dependant upon the ongoing care of the vendor.
I think most executives, professionals, and owners of small businesses would benefit from nurturing "client" relationships. That means:
路 Communicating that they are under your care
路 Being proactive in looking out for their best interests
路 Constantly working on strengthening and deepening the relationship
路 Giving them your best service and value on an ongoing basis
路 Providing value and peace of mind well beyond the commodity value of the transaction
Hope this helps! |

Client = fancier product, fancier geographic area, fancier service.
Customer = not as fancy
Same meaning though, different industries use different terminology.
The people you are designing for is your client and they are selling it to the customer or end-user. |

the company is the client you are designing for, the customers are who buys the product |

They are the same thing. Anyone who gives their money away for a product or service is the client/customer. |
