Honestly? Skip the label--at least for everything but legal issues. DIY (Do It Your-own-self), meaning get a computer, someone savvy with cheap or free music-editing and CD-burning software, record your music in a *lossless* digital format and burn your own CDs....really, you can get CD-Rs in bulk, especially the older "write once, read many" style disks, and get them dirt cheap.
Honestly. So many acts nowadays use Protools and other computer-audio tools in the studio any way, so I doubt it will be a bad thing if your first album is a homebrew EP of five tunes on 500 CD-Rs....really. ;) And even if you only distribute this stuff as *donationware* (meaning pay what you think the CD is worth, but not more than a buck per song), a 5 tune EP pays for itself with a fairly small run fairly quickly....
And it gets your name *out there*, which is the big thing right now.
Hope this Helps.

Try playing at clubs and stuff until people hear you and a record company comes and gives you a record deal. That's the only way you can do it.

Might try places like Youtube and myspace to tell people a little about yourself and allow them to sample your music/videos. Allow people to add you as friends and if they like you on myspace, they'll tell others, also everyone that adds you as a friend will have you on their page for more to see. If you post a video and it gets up near top of the list, A LOT of people will see it on main vid page when they click it.
