When did businesses start selling items for prices ending in .99 cents?

Hi,
I once read that when cash registers were first invented, a bell attached to the cash register would ring every time the cash register was opened. The bell ringing was supposed to notify the business owner who might be in another room, that a transaction had taken place.

Business owners decided to tag items with the 99 cent ending so that when customers paid for merchandise in dollar amounts, the 99 cent ending would force cashiers to open the cash register, thus causing the bell to ring.

Opening the cash register to give customers their penny back and the bell ringing discouraged the cashiers from putting the dollars straight into their pockets, instead of the cash register!

So apparently the 99 cent ending was originally a theft deterrant. I don't remember where I read that story at, but it does make a lot of "cents"(smiles!)
Peace!

When a person pricing planer start valuing 0.01 cents and assume that buyers will also.................................
Where as in present days buyers are very cautions and view .90, .95, or .99 cents or paisa much differently.

this is part of an entire article that i found....this part kind of answers your question....the rest of the article is about why they use prices ending in .99 cents...

No one knows exactly who invented 99-cent pricing or when it began.

One story, Dr. Thomas said, is that store owners in the 1930s who didn't trust their clerks created this pricing so the clerk would have to open the till to give change to the customer, rather than being able to quietly pocket the bills without the owner finding out.

A British consumer researcher, Rachel Bowlby of University College London, said she had heard an almost identical story in the United Kingdom, except that the organization credited with the invention was the charitable group Oxfam.
