Marketing research is often used to understand your target market, in terms of their demographics (age, income, geography, gender, etc.) or their psychographics (hobbies, values, preferences, etc.) Once you understand who your target market is and how they think, you can market to them much more effectively.
Marketing research is also needed whenever you want to test a new advertising concept, or even a new product or service. Before you invest thousands or even millions of dollars in launching an advertising campaign or a new product, it's best to create a survey to "test" that concept with your target market. In the case of a new product concept test, for example, you might ask survey respondents how much they would expect to pay for your product, where they would expect to buy it, what features they find most attractive, and how they would perceive your product compared to competing products.

Research should also be conducted prior to the product lauch in order for it to be successful. It then continues on a preiodic basis through all the stages of Product life cycle using various research tools such as surveys, feedbacks, direct-responses etc... |
