When will the ads on tv stop being stupid?
I don't mean for the ads to be gone completely. If they are gone, we all go poor. I mean for them to be a little more persuasive, or something.

They don't persuade me a bit. Instead of saying: "Buy that and that because of that and that" - they act like clowns in many ads. Let me not give you the examples, you think of some.

They would interrupt my favorite movie or show and go on with nonsense. They will not make me buy that thing by showing it to me that way. They need to show something different. "Nonsense" like that costs them a lot of money. Why can't something intelligent be shown instead? At least it would be worth the money it was paid for and it might even bring them some customers.

Do you agree with me?

I think they do that because we pay more attention if they are stupid. I say this because we will be like hey did you see that ad on tv it was so stupid. I think they have become more worried with their 15 seconds of fame than the dollar.

These stupid advertisements might not work on you... but suckers are falling for it all the time. Imagine if everyone stopped buying into nonsense.

Actually, I take the opposite view: I think most of the commercials are far less insultingly stupid than the TV shows in which they appear. But truthfully, both commercials and TV shows are carefully tested and they are the very best that someone can come up with ... at least until the next idea.

I've come to realize that advertisers pay to put their name and product out there for the consumer to buy. Once in a while they get lucky and some ad agency comes up with something brilliant that catches fire. Most of the time it's just something to let you know that they are around. If you own a business and you don't advertise then nobody knows about you - your business likely won't succeed. The stupid commercials are just there to let you know that they are in business.

We got one in our area for VW leasing. The commercial starts out like this: $199 used to buy you a pair of jeans... and then it goes on about leasing a brand new Jetta. When was the last time you paid 200 bucks for a pair of jeans. Lots of people who buy their jeans for less than $20 must shake their heads and wonder who writes these commercials.

Sometimes it's not about persuading to buy buy rather about brand recollection. Just say a person is trying to decide between two types of beer but knows nothing about beer. If Brand A is advertised but Brand B is not, Brand A is probably the more likely candidate. The reason is because Brand A would probably be perceived as more famous, well-liked, or desirable, simply because the name has been heard before.

In addition, a lot of it has to do with the area where you are watching ads. If you're in New York City or Chicago, which are the ad centers of the country, you're probably going to see better ads. I live in Tampa, so I see some good and some bad. Now, if you live in Shreveport, LA., you'll probably see non-stop Head-On and Wilkins Hyundai/Subaru ads made at the city's only TV studio.

Whatever the case, there are still lots of good ads to be found. The Cannes Lion competition is like the Oscar's for ads, awarding the spots that have the best impact. The problem is these ads are usually shown in major metropolitan centers or diluted by 500 other smaller agencies trying to get mediocre commercials on the air simply to have brand presence/recollection regardless of media quality.
