Good question. I have run a dating business on the Internet since 1998, and I can tell you that there are two ways

1. There is something called the organic listing, and they are the websites that come up first (under sponsored listings) You get to the top because you have been around the longest, have the most relevant words that a person has typed in the search engines for example: "free online dating" or "single" The search engine will go looking for a site that has those words in the title of their website, and also has the words somewhere on the main page of their site.

2. Now the sponsored listings appear above organic listings because companies pay for this. They actually bid for them and they will change all the time. They are not necessarily the most relevant sites, but they have paid to appear on top so you will click on them.

Search engines determine what sites get top links etc by the use of algorythms. These are known only to the search engines but experts such as SEO, search engine optimization pros have a good understanding of what it takes to achieve top rankings and can help you get your site better exposure by making it search engine ready. There are many steps to SEO and it can take much time to achieve top rankings.

You do not have to pay for top rankings unless you are using PPC, pay per click and that places you under the ad sitdes of search engines. Consumers know which are paid and which are organic. Some use PPC as a means of generating business while they wait for their site to gain in rankings through seo

when a search engine operates it uses meta tags therefore the search engine has certain criterias in terms of what form each search result operates it selects

1. The most closely related site with meta tags appears
2. The most trafficked website this is the one with the most people that visit
3. The one with most advertisement and financial revenue
4. The one matching the criteria of what is being looked up e.g baseball caps

When the search engine finds these sources it then determines the results

FOR example google uses the method of which site is most popular and relavent a meta tag appears on the html code and this is selected along with all the other factors above.

Lets say you design and site and it has computer games and it has this within its description you may NOTICE your site on the 5th page the reason for this is due to multinational comapnies and other websites that either have more advertisement, appeal, traffiking and agreement with the search engine

Overall the factors that determine the order of t6he search engine is based on the creteria above also notice when typing in any item if the trafficing changes so does the order

The natural rankings of website are determined by a number of things:

1) the number of external links coming to a website. The more relevant and useful links you have coming to your website the better the search engines will deem your website, because it is popular in the wonderful world that is the internet.
2) The number of times that the search term that has been enter appears on your website. For example, you cal have a million website pointing to yours, but if the searcher is looking for travel books and your website is all about swimming then you will not appear high for that search term.

3) The keywords that appear in your headings and title are very important to search engines so remember to include these.
