What you are really looking for is targeted traffic. The free classifieds are close to worthless. Nobody visits them except people wanting to post free classified.
There are other, much more effective ways you can attract targeted traffic -- mostly for free.
Here are a few methods:
1. Join forums that are related to your niche. Make helpful postings. Put your site URl and a brief promo ad in your signature, providing the forum permits you to do this. Every time you make a post, your signature appears at the bottom of the post, where it is viewed by people interested in your products.
2. Write articles about your niche. Submit them to ezine directories. Again, use a signature and link at the bottom of the page.
3. Make Squidoo lenses or blogs (free) about your nicche. Link to your web site. Use the social bookmarking sites to attract traffic to each blog, lens or article.
4. Make a YouTube video about your niche. Post it to YouTube.
5. Give away a free digital product that contains your advertising infomation. Encourage other people to pass the product along to their friends. This is called viral marketing.

I would suggest free article marketing... on a site like www.ezinearticles.com as long as you know what you are writing about and it make sense thats good. Also include a back link to your website so you can get people who visit and read the article to your website.
As far as the person who classified ads are worthless yes the free ones are -however if you paid ones optimized for the search engines are not - in fact I use them to generate quite a bit of traffic.

There are many different ways to advertise online at low to no cost.
One of the most effective ways I have found is through writing and publishing articles. They don't have to be about business, just anything you have had experience in. I have dozens of links for publishers (free) that I would be glad to share with you. This establishes a presence online and helps bring you up in the search engines.
Another good avenue is free business forums and social networks. There are several social networks for business that I am a member of that are free and you can communicate with others about your business. Unlike MySpace, these business communities are designed for business promotion. I would be glad to share tips on these if you wish.
If you aren't a member of any business forums, you can do a search for free business forums and check out those that may interest you.
There are traffic exchanges out there but in most cases, the visitors are just clicking through the ads to get credits and not really looking at your products.

go through yahoo. you can essentially decide how much you want to spend and just sponsor certain search terms. like if you have a toothpaste company you could only sponsor "dental hygiene" or "toothpase" or "tooth decay". they only charge you when they click on an ad.
it's the best way to target your market (it can be done geographically as well) and it's relevant to what they're searching for so they're more inclined to go to your website.
It's very cost effective because they give you an interface to change your daily/weekly/monthly spend and you can customize it based on keyword - so you know what's working and can spend your money in the right places.
