Where can I advertise my website for free?

An intermediate website developer looking for ways to get more hits. I would like to advertise my site for free. What are the best recourses to use that could promote the site. I already use Facebook/Myspace/YouTube to promote it. I know about Google AdWords so please do not tell me about that. I have just over 100 hits which is very disappointing...

You obviously do not have your web site properly coded nor have you even tried to use Google's Web Tools to set up a proper sitemap. I bet you don't even have a correct robots.txt installed.

Until you get you site semantically code to web standards, there is no need to submit it to the Search Engines as you could be penalized.

Link backs on already high ranking sites will get you more traffic. I would visit all the online Search Engine Optimization sites and read up on how to do it. They also have a lot of great online SE tools.

To me, blogs are sites anyway. Try posting your link on bulletin boards, join forums and put the link or banner ad to your blog in your signature, etc..

I would reccomend joining a forum and putting a link to your website in your signature. Forums cover many different subjects, so you would probably have little trouble finding one with a theme that interests you. Most forum members get to know each other pretty quickly and will likely check out your website just because you're a member of the same forum as them.

If you do choose to do this remember to pay attention to the rules of the particular forums you happen to join. Some Adminastrators don't want you to put advertisments in your signature, and since it's their forum you'd have to follow their rules. Most Adminastrators are just fine with it though.
