Everyone here gave you some good answers - the phone book is usually a necessary evil. Also, newspaper advertising can work but is also pricey - it has a high reach - but it is a mass audience and isn't as targeted.
As another poster said, you do want to decide WHO buys your product first - do you know this? If not, do some marketing research - what type of people buy your product? males ages 34-50? if so, then find out what publications they read and where they turn.
craigslist.org is free, that's a good start.
I also am a firm believer in person to person relationships. Visit other businesses that might use your glass and try to build a relationship with them where you send customers to each other.
Also, try ssa.gov - see what they have to say and advice they give. there is also a small business association throught the government you will want to join.
Join trade groups and local business groups and meet and network with people. This will take more work but will pay off in the long run. |

If you are not in the phone book yet - which is where I always look first if I don't have any good references for a particular service - then target your customer base with mailers or drop in. Do you replace windshields at the owners address? Then hit all the constructions companies or trucking companies. If it is window glass target owners or new construction if it is bathroom mirrors etc. Offer them special rates for the first call or just beat the competition with timeliness or price. |

Second, I would post my ads on the many free classified ad sites that are online and target my local market.

With any kind of advertising and marketing you must first decide who your main customer is. Who do you think is most likely to buy your product? Then find out if there are any publications specialising in your product/s. TARGETED advertising is always more effective than just slapping an ad in the local newspaper. Also you could make flyers and ask local public places such as post offices etc if you can leave them on display

You can simply place an ad in your local newspaper. This will cost you money. If you're a new business owner, you might want to stay away from newspaper companies because they charge big dollars to have your ad advertised in their daily paper.
There are numerous ways to get your ad to your customes or audience. You can post your ad at local grocery and department stores. You can do a flyer pass out at local sporting events or school meetings.
