It depends on the types of businesses you are looking for. Most of the time people are not looking for ALL businesses, but rather a certain target -- like service businesses, medical/dental offices, retail businesses, industrial businesses, etc.
Try Hoovers, Dun & Bradstreet, or searching the net for mailing lists. You can also try yellow pages or online directories (citysearch, yelp, google/yahoo local, etc) but you will have to harvest the information manually to use it.
Sometimes a local chamber of commerce or the local business newspaper will put out a "book of lists" talking about the top companies organized by certain attributes (top public companies, corp headquarters, etc).
You might also access public records -- sales tax permits, business licenses, etc.
Finally, try searching the web for commercial mailing lists that you can order for download or on CD. You generally will get what you pay for. The better, up to date lists with information that will help you target the right ones will cost you more. |

Go to CCR.Gov, then click on Search CCR, Search Small Businesses. It'll bring you to the Small Business Administration website, which lists also large businesses. You can search by Zip code to refine your results. |

Hi There - not sure where you can get a free listing, but if you go to www.mailinglists.com.au you can download every business in a ten postcode range for only $55 (other companies would charge you hundreds of dollars for it!).
You get the business name and all the contact details, like address, phone and fax numbers in an excel spreadsheet.
