Before you decide on where to advertise, you need to ask yourself these questions. Likewise, the decision as to where would depend on - what kind of product or service that you are trying to market? Another question you need to ask is who is your target market and where can you best locate them -geographically?
If your market is global - use the Internet - have an attractive website. If your market is local (domestic), you can do BUZZ MARKETING which means, you can gather opinion leaders (who have strong influence), relatives, friends - or in a party, you can start telling them about the product and service.
Make ready your promotional materials. Remember to keep your messages short. Your presentation should be IMPACTFUL But APPEARING TO BE DIFFERENT. It should catch their attention. Then make a presentation.
Or start a converstation by showing the attractiveness (by showing or stating the benefits and advantages to the possible users/ buyers; what are its unique selling proposition (what sets it apart from your competitors). Note that these should be RELEVANT, DISTINCT, CLEAR AND DESIRABLE QUALITITES.
You can also do PERMISSION MARKETING. Have a list of possible targets. Start asking their permission if you can offer them your product / service. More details on the Permission marketing can be found in the Marketing books. But this is just simple.
