I want to set up a website and am feeling a bit lost. Many sound good until I look up any complaints about them and then they aren't so good. Also I find that they are asking me questions that I have no way of answering, like how many visitors do I expect a day, how many mg's do I need etc. I have no way of knowing how many people will visit the site, but I do know that I need 3 linkups - two that will go to word formats and the 3rd to a very small forum. I do not want any forced ads or banners on the site. If I decide to put ads in then I want to be the one to make that decision and also make the decision as to what ads I will allow. It is also imperative that I have a domain name that I can move around with me should I decide to change web hosts. Where can I acquire a domain name for a reasonable amount of money. And can anyone suggest a good web host? (There are 2 questions here). |

People used to pay $30/year for a .com domain not so long time ago—because there was pretty much no competition—, the same registrars are still overcharging nowadays though—I think in particular about Network Solutions ($12/year for a .com).
So you should not pay nowadays more than $9/year for a .com domain from a renowned registrar. Here are few suggestions below and their respective geographic presence (am not an affiliate whatsoever):
—1&1 (1and1.com) covers US and Europe
—GoDaddy (www.godaddy.com), US presence only
—Gandi (www.gandi.net) is one of the most regarded registrar in Europe
Although it's a best practice to do business with providers close to your targeted audience, domain name registration could be performed with a registrar from any place in the world with the web host being at the antipodes.

The ideal solution would be to select a web host close to your targeted audience, ideally in the same country, and ideally your actual domain name registrar—just for convenience.
Why so?
First, in terms of performance, having your site close to visitors obviously ensures them a better experience because the response latency will be lower.
Second—not the least—, search engines (SE) like Google will geolocalize your site based on the IP address assigned and will give it a boost within their country-specific catalog of pages.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Pretty much all web hosts include the free domain name registration whenever you subscribe to one of their hosting plans. I would never strongly enough recommend not to register your domain name through this kind of offer but instead to register the domain name separately from the hosting package—so you get 2 separate products (i.e., domain and hosting) from the same registrar. This way you remain in total control of the ownership of your domain name.
