It really depends on the type of website you have the type of traffic you're wanting to. For instance, let's say you have a site that's for pets, you wouldn't advertise on a site that's dedicated for cats. Do your research!
Find sites that have a similar interest as your site, sites that have visitors who's more likely to click on your link, visitors who's looking for your service/product...quality, targeted traffic! Find out their conversion rate, their traffic etc. Advertisting on free sites, you get what you pay for!
Please, please if you don't have your own domain name. PLEASE get one! Godaddy domain names are $8.99 for the year!
