Which cold calling company has annoyed you the most?

Additional Details
Charlie D: The most effective advertising is word of mouth, the least effective is cold calling.
It's also the one of the most mind boggingly awful jobs to do.
If you have a good product advertise it properly.

You all are certainly quick to bash salespeople. You all need a lesson in basic economics.
Cold-calling is how business contacts are made.
Every one of you (unless you are a government worker) depends on SALES for your paycheck.

* Correction- Word of mouth is one of the LEAST effective means of marketing! Businesses that try to rely on "word of mouth" are only fooling themselves, and they generally fail.
Also, many products cannot realistically be sold through traditional advertising- hence, the need for cold-calling and other alternative forms of marketing.

Oh dont get me started!!!

We get about 4 phone calls a week from Space Kitchens. They ring so often that we have pu the number in our contact list on the phone so the number comes up when they ring!
Despite me being downright rude and nasty to them- which is not like me at all - they still keep on coming.
I even told them I just recently had a new kitchen - they still keep ringing.
AAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!

There are loads that annoy me at work. Technically I guess they're not "cold" callers now that I've spoken to them a few times, but the calls are certainly unwanted and unsolicited.

I used to be the Office Manager at my company and therefore was in charge of stationery, cleaning, water supplies, etc etc etc which is why all these people wanted to talk to me. I moved out of this position TWO YEARS AGO and yet these people still call me, even though I've repeatedly told them they don't want to speak to me and have even given them the name of the correct person.

EDIT: Charlie D - this is nothing to do with "basic economics". Cold calling is certainly not the ONLY way to generate new business. For example, if I wanted air conditioning provided to my office, I would google "air conditioning" or I would look in the Yellow Pages. I wouldn't sit there and wait to be called. Furthermore, in my situation, it is in fact a waste of their time when they are repeatedly calling the wrong person despite having already been told so - this isn't generating new business; they're not going to get any business from me because I do not have capacity to give them any business.

Anglian Windows called me about 8 times in a short period, despite me saying I wasn't interested. One young man even told me a rep WOULD call to see me the next day, regardless, and hung up. I was eagerly awaiting until his supervisor called me to confirm, and I complained.
The firm also kept sending letters personally addressed to me. I don't know where they got my details. I have never enquired about their products, and have no interest.
As a point of principle, I never deal with any firm who wastes my time in cold calling me. I have now registered with the telephone preference service, mainly as a result of Anglian's harassment.

I got very short with a cold caller recently. It was from my home insurance company that wanted to give me a quote for my car.

First they warned me that for security reasons and to reduce fraud, this conversation was being recorded, and that any information I gave would be passed to other companies. I was then asked, again for security reasons to give my name, address, date of birth... even though they had all these on file or they would not be calling me.

At this point, I explained that for security reasons I was not going to give out my personal details on a cold call. The saleswoman then reminded me that if I was committing a fraud I was obliged to give her the correct information, so that she could inform the authorities and other companies of her suspicions. This was for a quote on a cold call. I am actually quite happy with my existing car insurance, fully comp. for less than £100. I told her I did not wish to continue this conversation.

If she had a lie detector (if this was a cold call from a Government department she would have done) then yes a certain amount of tension could be detected at this point. I was pretty angry at this intrusion and the suggestion that if I did not answer her security questions I was some sort of criminal. Quite possibly I am being put down for surveillance as I write this.

In the past I have had cold callers offering me a free holiday for me and my partner. If I tell them I live alone, they are satisfied and leave me alone. These are Council Tax snoopers checking up on me, and would quite possibly be linked to a pantograph.
