The first domain I bought cost $100. These days, the most expensive sites are $35, and most sites cost less than a third of that.
You can even get free domains. I have one that ends in .in.us that costs nothing. While most of the US domains are comparable in price to COM, NET and ORG, the ones that end in a state abbreviation followed by US are usually free or close to it. (You need to do some research to find who the registrar is for a given state in the US registry.)
I don't recommend those free domains, though. When you need to change something in your registration, such as the name servers, you have to correspond by mail, and rely on an unpaid volunteer to do your scut work. It's a lot easier to deal with a paid registrar.
Given that all domain names are incredibly cheap, you should be looking at the registrar's reputation for honesty, and their software.
You'll find ENOM to be at the top of the heap. They have a sterling reputation, and their software is excellent. If you need to get them on the phone, they are OK. They know they're the best, and they charge accordingly, though.
GoDaddy is the biggest. They have a good reputation, and their software is quite adequate. On the other hand, they make it difficult to buy *just* a domain name. They twist your arm to buy hosting (and their hosting, I'm told, isn't the best) and privacy protection.
I resell for Public Domain Registry. Their reputation is good, and their software is quite adequate. I offer a toll-free number you can call with questions 24x7 - and if you don't want to use a credit card online, I accept credit cards over the phone or checks in the mail. If you don't want to use the software, you can have me handle everything for you over the phone. And privacy protection (proxy registration) is free.
I don't sell at a loss, like GoDaddy, and I don't charge quite as much as Enom. How can I offer that personal service at the prices I do? Some people decide they like that service - and they want to buy hosting from me as well. Other people decide they like that service, and they spread the word; I don't have to spend *anything* for advertising.
But you won't go wrong with Enom or GoDaddy, either. Neither one of them is going to steal your domain name. |

Two come to my mind, bigdaddy and Yahoo both have some really good deals very low. I have been thinking about doin the same thing I write a weekly news letter and this would make my life a lot easier. I have seen it as low as $1.99 for the first year. |

Yahoo was pretty good for me - it was $1.99 (after using a discount coupon - you can find the coupon codes when you search for it on the internet). The $1.99 however is just for the 1st year.
Don't forget to make your details private - this incurs and additional cost, but at least your name and address will be protected!
I think all up, the domain name plus the private details option thing I just described ended up being around $11 for 1 year. Not bad eh? |
