Google has the most market share among the search engines as more people use it. Given that more people use it, it can bring you significantly more traffic if you get good rankings compared to other search engines.
According to SearchEngineWorld.com based on comScore Media Metrix data, following are the market shares of search engines (as of July 2005):
Google = 36.5%
Yahoo = 30.5
MSN = 15.5
AOL - 9.9
Google managed to increase its market share in Aug 2005 to 37.3
You can prioritize your search engine marketing efforts on Google, but also make sure you optimize your website for other search engines |

Depends on the business. For the best general purpose one to get listed by, I'd use the two busiest--yahoo and google. |

You can be listed on any of the search engines for free and you should submit to them all.
The problem is not being listed, it's being listed high enough for anyone to find you. When I got that through my head a huge light went on for me.
I learned very early how to get traffic to my site, which is now listed in the top 1 tenth of 1 per cent of all sites world wide for traffic according to Alexa. You can verify this at http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?q=&url=writershelper.com (Those are the stats for my site. Any number lower than 500,000 is excellent. As you will see, I'm far below that.)
I am no guru. I simply followed the advice of my Web host. I've put the link in the source box below.
P.S. I never submit my pages to the search engines. My Web host does that automatically for me. That and loads more. |
