Zelulu | While doing a presentation in a meeting, what impresses people slickness? or artisitc? or a mix of both? |
We are asking for funds for a project, please, any tips? What are people looking for? We are meeting with VERY important people. How should I handle this? And of course how can i make myself seem even more brilliant then i am? |

For this I would reccomend a lil' bit of both, but don't forget to get right to the point of why you wan't the funding.
You must:
Not make it over-whelming with colours and pics.
make it short and sweet with the text, if you put too much in it puts them off.
if you are able to tell them that you will show them evidence that thier Funding was well spent e.g. Video, pictures or a quick diary sheet from people who are taking part.
but this is most important, for the love of god make sure that everything in the presentation is relevant in everyway to the funding.
best of luck with this and I truly hope you get those funds! |

Having all the facts at your fingertips. Sounding confident but not brash. Showing good knowledge of the business, or your part of it.Don't go on too long and bore people. Invite questions after the presentation, rather than at the same time. Get in you mission statement. DON'T try to make yourself seem more brilliant than you are, just be yourself. If they are V. Important people they will probably be V.Clever and V.Astute as well, and you don't want them to catch you out (not that they will be trying to do that) They want to invest their funds as much as you want the funds. Also they have probably done this many times before. Have you? Make sure you have the necessary equipment like projectors, brochures , hard copy of presentation (more than the number of people attending), business cards etc.
If it is in your offices are you providing sandwiches and drinks(alcoholic and soft) after the presentation? This is when you can have an informal chat, one to one with your guests. You will find out what they really think in a relaxed atmosphere. |

First, don't try to make yourself seem "even more brilliant" than you are. If they see you as being on an ego trip, that will be a big turnoff. Just be yourself - treat them as though you are all on the same level - you are not better than them, they are not better than you.
To get the funding showcase your product, not yourself. Show them the reason for the project, the goals and plans. Have it all spelled out for them - they won't invest if you don't have a solid plan. When they ask questions, don't make anything up or fudge - be honest and tell them you don't know the answer but will get back to them tomorrow with details. They will respect you for being honest with them.
Good luck to you! |

Content matters the most. Have your objectives of the presentation laid out.
Start off with a story...then go into
1) Who you are--high level
2) What you want to do with the money--high level
3) How will it be spent--detail
4) How are they benefiting-high level
Send out an agenda before hand. Keep track of action items and next steps (following up on the presentation) during the meeting. Close with the next steps.
Get the group engaged, you ask questions to them. Don't talk too much, else people tune out. If you are doing it with a partner switch-off. Leave at least 25% of the time for questions.
Have hand-outs if possible. |

Confidence rather than big-headedness is always good. Being fully prepared and knowing your product. Basically, if they are going to give funds for your project, they will want to know that the project is going to succeed and more importantly that they are going to get a return for their investment. This does not need to be monetary. Perhaps they are looking to establish their name as good supporters. Will they have any advertising during this project? Will their name be mentioned anywhere? You need to know what they want out of this and make sure they know it will be delivered, without fail.
Those are the important things, confidence and a well presented (but not overly artistic) product are what will win the day. Attention to detail is important, both for those presenting and for the presentation itself. I once had a presentation given to me by a very slick guy, with a great product, we didn't go with him as he sadly had some of his morning's egg on his tie and it was totally off-putting. My boss ultimately felt that if someone could miss something like that, then what else could they miss? |

Keep the artistic side of the presentation to a minimum. It needs to look professional but leave out any artistic gimmicks.
The people you are presenting to will want to see that you fully understand the project and that you can explain its purpose, benefits etc. clearly and concisely.
remember the KIS principle - Keep it simple !! |

be honest and enjoy what you are doing. Rekindle the excitement you first had for your project and to really impress your client learn about them and make the pitch personal to them. good luck |

Understand your audience - what questions do they want answered in order to release funds for your project with confidence.
Remember that people in general won't remember most of what you say so you have to make sure that they will remember your most important messages.
Start by telling them what you're going to cover in the presentation (limit it to three sections if possible), signpost where you are in the presentation and repeat your messages at the end - with the first and third message being the most important.
Don't try to be anybody you're not and let your product and the benefits to the funders do the convincing.
forget about "slick" or "artistic" the focus is on the messaging and communicating that professionally in a way that will engage your audience and that is natural to you, your marketplace and your product. |

Hack #1: Rephrase Questions
When you get asked a question, spend a few seconds to rephrase the question. If you are giving a speech to an audience this has the first benefit of clearly stating the audience members question for everyone to hear. But the hidden benefit of doing this is that it gives you a few extra seconds to prepare a response.
Polished professional speakers and interview veterans can prepare for common questions in advance with a great reply. But if you don’t have the experience or a question throws you off balance, you can maintain composure by rephrasing the question. To everyone it looks as if you immediately knew an eloquent response, but in reality you were given a few seconds to process a response.
Hack #2: Pause, Don’t Trip
When you are nervous, everything gets magnified. During an interview, speech or presentation forgetting what you intended to say or losing your flow of speech can be terrifying. When this happens remember to stop and take a deep breath. This pause feels incredibly unnatural for the speaker, but it is usually barely noticed by the audience.
Pausing is far better than tripping over your words and making incoherent sentences. Most people end up speaking too fast when they feel nervous, so intentionally slowing down and taking time to pause can prevent tripping over your words which is a lot more noticeable.
Hack #3: Write Out the Tricky Parts
If you have to talk for over five or ten minutes, it can be difficult and incredibly time-consuming to prepare every single word of your speech and memorize it. Many professional speakers instead choose to just write major topic headings so they understand the structure but can deliver the speech naturally.
When you get a chance to practice your presentation, notice points where you trip up. These are usually the same points you will have trouble with when presenting. Write out those few sentences word for word before presenting. The easy parts of your speech will continue to flow and you can be thoroughly prepared to handle the harder parts.
Hack #4: Watch Your Apologies
Never apologize when the goal of that apology is to soften the criticism of the audience. Some speakers apologize for appearing nervous when giving a speech. The truth is most the people in the audience wouldn’t have realized the speaker was nervous until he apologized for it. Apologizing from where you lack confidence only draws more attention to your weaknesses and detracts from your performance.
Apologies for legitimate errors are acceptable, but apologies designed to elicit sympathy won’t help your performance.
Hack #5: Don’t Distract With Powerpoint
Powerpoint presentations are very popular among presenters. But remember that as a speaker you want the focus to be on you. Slides should enhance your presentation, not form a backup. If I can get all the information I need out of your slides, why should I pay attention to you?
If you watch any presentations done by hugely successful speaker and marketer Seth Godin, you quickly notice how many of his slides are nothing more than a single image or word. These slides enhance the message he is trying to convey but they don’t steal the spotlight since they don’t contain enough information to distract. |
