You can choose whether to watch or not. Commercials are paid advertising by the corporations and businesses who pay for them. The networks and local stations charge for them. That alone pays for the programming.
I record most shows and zap the commercials because they are so atupid.

The blame is spread around. Corporations pay advertising companies to make ads that sell their products. The agencies make the commercials and pay the TV outlets to put them on. If enough people complain about a particular commercial to the same station/network, it may be taken off.
