McDonald's has many different target customers across a significant portion of the demographics of the world. The employ a number of different advertising agencies, each focusing on one or more of the markets. While they do some very specific, targeted outreach to sub-groups, it's mainly anyone who eats at a restaurant and has at least a little bit of money.
Some of the sub-groups they market to are:
Children
Parents of Small Children
Teens
Business People (Free WiFi in some restaurants)
Ethnic Minorities
Urban
Rural
Sub-Urban
Also keep in mind that a corporation has many levels of marketing to match the different business offerings:
Food for Restaurant Goers
Jobs for Entry-Level Employment Seekers
Careers in Restaurant Management Professionals

They try to appeal to a very broad swath of the population, not a narrow demographic. In general, I'd expect that they would appeal to:
- families with kids
- people without a lot of money
- people who want a quick, cheap meal with predictable (though not stellar) quality.

Their target customer is every demographic possible. Think about it:
The cheap (dollar menu millionaire)
The rich (premium chickens, premium coffee, etc)
Kids (happy meals)
Health conscious (salads, parfaits, apples)
Elderly (newspapers, coffee)
Teens (hangout spot, food is reasonable price)
Adults (bigger meals, bigger portions)
They have it all covered. Take a look at their latest commercials with "Nuggnuts" targeting poker players and such. |

Children! Almost every commercial is directed towards children by showing them a new toy they can get or a celebrity or a McDonald's cartoon character.
Ultimately though, it's up to the parents if they want to allow their children to eat there or not. |

Lazy parents who can't be fucked for cooking a meal at home !!!!! (no offence).
If more people just boycott McDonald's and all those other major fast food outlets then people would live longer and healthier. |

Fat, lazy, stupid people. Fat because they eat McDonalds and are addicted to saturated fat. Lazy because they should go buy groceries and cook but they don't. They eat that garbage and feed it to their children.
