Why are items priced .99 always in stores?( $99.99, ) why not just display $100.00?

it's the art of sublimal persuation.....would you be more apt to buy something if it said "2 for $5.00" or "$2.50"?? which one "seems" like the better deal? Just because the brain sees "2 for" then it automatically thinks "ohhh, 2 for the price of 1!" It's all a marketing ploy....and it works!!

INACTIVE
It's just the psychology of it.

just another marketing strategy for consumers that are tight on their money. with the economy upheaval, everyone wants something that is either cheaper, with a freebie or nothing. so you just have to watch out....sometimes, the stores use this scheme during the festive periods, when alot of tourist and local consumers are driven by the dozen to buy nice but less costly and yet not too economical...so there goes your 9.99, 12.99 or 34.59 just to give us all a big illusion that it is less expensive than 10, 13 or 34.60 bucks worth of goodies!

Because, believe it or not, many, if not most, people register $.99 as less than $1.00, and $99.99 as less than $100.00.

fistfull-of-$
It is a subtle play on your senses where market research has shown if the price appears below the psychological threshold of a hundred the price seems acceptable where as in reality it is not too far away from it.

what the heck?
There has to be some justification for continuing to create the penny. Since inflation has made penny candy obsolete, we have to price everything so that we can get the penny as change.

Yes,its true, its advertising psychology. Makes you think you are getting it just a little cheaper.

This is so the register has to be opened and record the transaction; otherwise, you could pocket the money.

(What stops you from having a jar of pennies at the ready? Shhhhh!)

This is the marketing principal of "odd pricing." As others have said, 9.99 looks a lot cheaper than 10.00 on first glance. When I'm quoted an odd price, "That will cost you 7.99," I always shoot back a quick answer like "Oh, you mean 8.00." At that point the saleperson usually seems perplexed! It's like I know what they are up to.

Old marketing technic from the 50's that is still implemented in old farts marketing classes.

Surprisingly enough it is still in effect though, as most people are total sheep that will fall for that kind of stuff.

.99 looks cheaper than rounding up to the next whole dollar (supposedly).
