If you price too high, people will think it is not a good value.
If you price too low, people will often assume it is of low quality.
Perceived Value is the single most important factor in price setting, and most advertising is designed to influence the customers perception of the product value.

Money is what keeps every company going, so they can't be giving the customers too good of a discount and so forth or they will end up not making enough for themselves and going under. One pricing decision times thousands of customers accounts for a LOT of money sometimes.

it is not always, but for a company you must get back what you put into it. for the consumer you must sell to them on feature, application and venefit not price. create an experience they want to buy and the price will never ever matter

Properly pricing a service or product is incredibly important. If an organization undercuts the competition pricing by to much any your profit margin is not at the level it could be, potentially leading to unhappy stock holders. Price it to high and you risk alienating potential customers from purchasing it.
Companies usually will conduct pretty good market research to determine market strength for the product, likely demographics, and current market pricing and trends.
