Why are watches are setting at 10:11:36 in the ads?

MamaBear
Digital or analog? The analogs are set at 10:11 because they did research and found that the "V" that was formed by the hour and minute hand at 10:11 was the one that was the most aesthetically "pleasing" to customes. It's a tradition that probably carried over into the digital age -- getting the 36 seconds means that the second hand is not quite forming a "Y", but is just enough off for it not to look "fake."

Ain't marketing research wonderful? :-)

Sir Douglas
it's always been like that. I think it spreads the hands to show the best parts of the watch, like the jewel in the center perhaps or the name of the mfg.

It's an interesing thing though isn't it?

It's considered to be the most visually pleasing on the watch dial. Also, since the watch manufacturers name is customarily placed on a line slightly above or equal to the 10 and 2 on the dial, it places the hour and minute hands as close to the name as possible without blocking it..

To show off all the hands. It is an industry standard....

Maybe all the hands of the watch are clearly visible when set at that time.
Unless of course it's a digital.

that is probably the manufactored date

The hands on a clock or watch are placed at 10:10 so that the company logo on the face will be framed and not blocked by the hands. The industry standard used to be 8:20 but that looked like a frown. The 10:10 setting looks more like a smile.

The exact time setting is not actually 10:10, but 10:09 and 36 seconds.
