Why do I need to give my Social Security # to stop unsolicited mail, spam, etc.?
I called the phone # months ago to stop the junk mail but disconnected the call when I had to give my Social Security #. There should be absolutely no need for them to have that information in order to cease the tons of mundane rubbish that courses through the Post Office and e-mail systems.
I agree with you. Anything like that that asks for your social is a scam.

Sounds like a gimmick. I would have done just what you did.

That sounds like a scam. I know of NO service that can stop smap and junk mail and telemarketers. That's technically impossible! What is this number you called? Where did you find it?
You can only stop telemarketers at http://www.donotcall.gov
Edit: You CAN get off junk mailing lists, but it takes a while to take effect. Use this form at
http://www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailinglist/
Fill it out and print it. File by mail to avoid the $5 fee. This is linked from the US Postal Service.

I think it a scam. DO not go for it.

no, they shouldn't have asked you for your ss#. if this is through e-mail there should be an option at the very bottom to unsubsribe. You can enter your e-mail address there to update the database of unwanted e-mail.. if it's in your mailbox, I guess the only option would be to call them, but again no ss# is required.

So that they can steal your identity. There are "Phish"ers who steal your identity and "Card"ers who steal you credit line. Sometimes if you're dumb enough, they get both. Their usual modes of action are fake emails, fake websites, or bogus, password-stealing "free programs."
Typically this is done by teenage boys who picture themselves as "hackers" that belong to something called WAREZ groups (pronounced like "wares") who initially started out illegally trading software, but have now delved into computer-based petty theft. Think of them as pimply faced, street-gang-want-to-be, Internet nerds without a conscience. They would refer to you as a "lamer."
