Advertising agencies will in most cases have a strategic planner in house. These people make it their business to know everything about the market place, from whats selling now, to what people are getting tired of, to what people want in the future.
if you want to advertise effectively it is quintessential to understand your consumer otherwise you cant effectively talk to them.
Advertising is all about communicating with a specific group (segmented by demographic, psychographics etc) of people, which is why you need to understand them.
Ipods are a great example. people from all demographics use ipods (even baby boomers). so we know people like ipods. Why? because it gives them choice, they are then the master of what they are listening to, or watching, they can listen to their music whenever they want - so what does this mean for, say a product like tuna?
If people want what they want, when they want it, it has a lot to do with it. You might release a small packed tuna that you can take with you anywhere, its easy to open, it might already have sweet chilli on it, which means the consumer can have it wherever they want, whenever they want.
thats why you need to understand consumer behaviour - not just the behaviour in relation to your product. |
