Why do businesses offer mail in rebates and not just give instant rebates?

They're counting on the fact the majority of the population will be too lazy to send in for the rebates. If they did an instant rebate they'd have to pay them all out - since only a small percent of purchasers actually send away for rebates the businesses save a lot of money.

Simple...Most people never send in the mail in rebates, so the company never has to pay!

Companies use the rebate as a way to gather valuable customer information for data mining and sales. Rebates are an additional way to track sales progress as well.

Rebates create "sale appeal" that draws extra attention to their products and helps the value perception of a product.

because they hope u will forget to mail in the rebate and so then they won't have to give u the $ back

Because most companies bank on rebates bating most to make the initial purchase, and in a lot of cases the people making the purchases based on the rebate "incentive" never actually submit the mail-in rebate, so therefore the company makes more money. I think I read somewhere a few months back that only 20% of all people who have purchased an item with a mail-in rebate actually submit the rebate back for their money. I personal avoid mail-in rebates, because historically, I haven't done a good job sending them in. Although it is nice when you forget about a rebate, and then get a random check via the mail for $50 and can't remember why :).

Two reasons. First as everyone else has said, they hope that people don't redeem them for some reason. Second, interest. You buy something the money eventually winds up in the companies bank account where it starts drawing interest. The rebate coupon gets to them and they sit on it for weeks, then finally get around to paying it 4 to 6 weeks or longer later. Meanwhile the entire purchase price has accrewed interest to help offset the rebate they send out. If they gave an instant rebate they'ed lose that opportunity.

They have to wait til the get commissions before they can give you an rebate. Plus you may back out and decide you don't want to keep it and then they lose.

.Drake .
Because a lot of people are too lazy to mail them in. It's a money saver.

Pastor Art
Because most people will forget to ask for the rebate.

I purchased a computer with a $300 rebate once and I had to complain for six months before I finally got my check.
