Psychology. If you pay 14.95$ for something, you may think you're paying 14$ instead of 15$. |

the government is a ripoff, if the price is 3.14 9 for gas, technically you are buying gas for 3.15 |
|

justme

So you think you're paying 2.89 per gallon when you're really paying 1/10 of a cent less than 2.90! |
|

Amee

ITS NOT PART OF THE PRICE..........U CAN ONLY FILL UR TANK NINE TENTHS OF THE WAY FULL |
|

Joe
 |
it's so they can post $2.93 a gallon instead of $2.94 a gallon and make more profit with those 9/10 of a cent. |

The girl is a geek.

It's taxes. |

its so when it says 2.89&9/10. its really 2.90. but they write it the other way to look cheaper. |

Arbitrage

So that they can charge you an extra cent without most people noticing it. It's similar to the 2.99 vs. 3.00 pricing in stores. |

I've heard most marketers do that because research shows that people feel like they're getting a better deal if the cost ends in 9. |
|

Because people don't even think about that .9 and pay it.
if they sell 1000 gallon they get $9 more without people even realizing that. |
|

stacimpierce
 |
i believe that psychologically people do not pay attention to the 9 so that think it is cheaper |

Very good question....might have something to do with gasoline taxes that states have on gasoline? |
|

glassroseheart
|
so they can charge you a little extra without you noticing |

it's a psychological reason actually. for whatever reason, $1.99 9/10 seems al ot cheaper than $2.00 even though there is only 0.009 cent difference. with a 16 gallon fill up, that's only a saving of .144 cents to us. however, for a gas station owner that may have 100+ cars fill up every day, that's at least extra $14.40 in his/her pocket.
it was actually 'invented' by the jews who were master businessmen in the early 1900's. |

Same reason you see prices elsewhere ending with 99 cents. It's a pyschological trick as old as marketing itself. People see the earlier numbers and subconsciously think something is cheaper than it is. Car makers can bill a $9,999 car as the best [insert car type here] under $10K without being indicted for false advertising. With gasoline, this is especially prevalent because fractions of cents are alien to people, and seen as insignificant. Over thousands and thousands of gallons each day, that .9 cents can account for a significant chunk of change. |

if your talking about a fraction its so they can do it without most people noticing it. for example "hey honey which gas is cheaper?" response: "it was $2.53 down the road." how many people say it was 2 dollars and 53 cents and a 9th of a cent.... seems like no one cares even though its practically another cent. |
|

ninjaswordthrow

So the oil monopolies can squeeze an extra 9/10 of a cent of you with every gallon of gas. |

ask the jews. |
|

geordiejamorg
|
Because it makes them look/sound cheaper than the next whole number. (Cobblers, but that's the theory) |
|

I believe its a marketing strategy. instead of saying 3 dollars they say 2.99 to make you think oh look I can buy that because its cheaper than 3 dollars.
(p.s. be careful, 2.99 is only a penny away from 3 dollars.) |
